Head of R&D – Marine, Offshore & Wind
Lead Glamox R&D for Marine, Offshore & Wind: set strategy, build a multidisciplinary, high-impact team, and drive modular, connected lighting platforms for the world’s harshest environments.
Introduction
Offshore platforms in the harshest seas. Naval fleets. Wind farms far from shore.
Around the world, Glamox Marine, Offshore & Wind designs and delivers lighting systems that have to perform where failure is not an option. We are looking for a Head of R&D to lead our engineering organization and define what comes next: intelligent, connected lighting systems built for the world’s most demanding environments.
This is a build-and-lead role with a genuine mandate to raise the capability of our R&D organization. You will define the technology and platform roadmap, strengthen a multidisciplinary engineering team, and shape the next generation of products and systems. You will lead the shift from standalone luminaires towards modular platforms, connected lighting, and digital capabilities, working closely with Product Management, Sales, Production, Procurement, Compliance, and the central LMS team.
What you'll do
As Head of R&D, you own the innovation agenda from strategy through execution. You will:
• Set and execute the R&D strategy, balancing standard products, platforms, and systems
• Build, lead, and develop a multidisciplinary team across mechanical, electrical, and software engineering
• Drive a modular platform strategy that lets a focused team serve many project variants efficiently
• Own product and platform architecture, deciding what to standardize, reuse, or build once, in close partnership with Product Management on portfolio priorities
• Think in systems, and work closely with the central LMS team to bring connected lighting, integration, and data into MOW products for demanding environments
• Raise the maturity of R&D processes, methods, and engineering practice
• Manage the project portfolio, balancing risk, opportunity, and resources
• Ensure delivery of best-in-class products that meet quality, compliance, and customer requirements on time
• Turn technology trends into differentiation, efficiency, and commercial value
• Build partnerships with universities, research institutions, and key suppliers
Who you are
You are an experienced technology leader with strong product instincts and a systems mindset. You understand how hardware, software, and real-world applications come together to create differentiated products.
You are:
A systems thinker who naturally connects hardware, software, electronics, and application.
A product developer who cares as much about the physical product as the complete system around it.
A platform thinker who builds scalable, reusable architectures instead of one-off solutions.
A strategic leader who translates business ambitions into clear technology priorities and makes sound architectural trade-offs.
A people leader with a proven ability to build, develop, and strengthen engineering organizations.
Commercially minded, with a strong understanding of cost-performance trade-offs, customer value, and product profitability.
An effective communicator who builds trust across engineering, commercial, and operational teams.
Curious, forward-looking, and motivated by leading change
What You Bring
MSc in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Around 10–15 years of experience in product development, including leadership of multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Experience leading engineering organizations of approximately 10–30 people, with responsibility for developing both people and capability.
A proven track record of taking complex physical products from concept to market.
Experience owning technology roadmaps, product platforms, and system architecture—not only individual development projects.
Experience developing hardware, electronics, power, or integrated systems for demanding or regulated environments.
Strong credibility in connected systems, including lighting controls, integration, IoT, and data-enabled solutions.
Experience with modular product architecture and platform development.
Hands-on experience with structured product development processes such as Stage-Gate and Agile.
Excellent written and spoken English and Norwegian.
A Strong Advantage
Experience from marine, offshore, energy, defence, heavy industry, or other demanding environments.
Familiarity with certification and regulatory frameworks such as DNV, IEC, IECEx/ATEX, NORSOK, or marine type approval.
Deep understanding of luminaire technologies, including LED, optics, thermal management, drivers, and materials.
Additional education or certification in innovation, leadership, or project management.
Experience from shipyards, offshore installations, or other field environments.
